Why do I need an oral surgeon if I have a dentist?

 The relationship between your oral surgeon and your general dentist is key to ensuring optimal results for your surgical needs. Generally speaking, patients are typically referred to an oral surgeon by their general dentist. Your dentist may suggest that you see a specific surgeon near you, or provide several recommendations for you. Educational Background and Training

While all dentists must attend four years of dental school prior to receiving their dental degree, oral and maxillofacial surgeons spend an additional four to six years of extensive study and intensive training in medicine, surgery, anesthesia, cosmetic and trauma surgery, corrective jaw surgery, and implant dentistry. Once training is complete, many oral surgeons submit for written and oral examinations to achieve board certification and some even receive medical degrees after completing medical school.

Oral surgeons are trained in sophisticated dental implant placement and the various hard and soft tissue grafting procedures that are done to optimize implant results. These procedures are routine for us. We also treat orthognathic or jaw issues and traumatic facial injuries.
